BLOG-Hello Summer

Well, in a few days, Memorial Day arrives and you know what that means? Yup, we just finished almost 6 months of the year. Where did it all go? I feel like it was just Christmas. Perhaps it’s the music business…we always have to work 6-12 months ahead of the game. Whether that means writing Christmas songs in the summer, or booking winter gigs in July.

Spring finally arrived here on the east coast, and yesterday was just as pretty as it gets. Now, since it has been so cold, those pesky little Cherry Blossoms have yet to show their pretty faces. The festival was extended, thinking they would arrive yesterday. So, yes, buckets of people, 5 layers deep all descended upon DC yesterday. Traffic around the trees was unreal and at a stand still all afternoon. But, what did they see? Well, they did not see blossoms. We are so impatient that the first nice day, we run to see the flowers in full bloom…only to be disappointed.

BLOG-The perfection of Live Music

This week, many of us had a discussion on live music today. Still, in my mind, there really is no replacement for live music – meaning, people are actually playing their instruments and people are actually singing in their microphones. In the new digital world, the Katy’s, Madonna’s, Chris Browns, and Thievery Corporations have made their money singing (or often not singing) against tracks for fear that their ‘live’ sound may not live up to their produced (overly) CD.

An interesting week this was. I typically dread the January time. It’s cold and dark, but so far this month has been outrageously great. The last three months, I have been in a song-writing slump…not a happy place for a songwriter to be, but this month---life is baaaaccccckkkkk! Inspiration began flowing again.

It’s early and as you stretch, open your peepers, the first thing that comes to your mind? Coffee, a latte, a cappuccino? Some of us get barely dressed and head to our neighborhood Starbucks, while others…make use of our coffee machines at home. This love of caffeine is widely felt not just across the US, but the world. And, love is most likely an understatement. For me, it’s almost an obsession.

Woke up this morning after a long Long Beach weekend of gigging to the news that Osama has been put out of our misery. It is not often that I smile at the demise of anyone's death. In fact, it would be my first, but Osama bin Laden represented a cruelty and such a misunderstanding of his own faith, that he was causing friction between people that would have normally embraced as brothers.

One great thing about spring is the start of baseball. There is something magic about going to a live game. Sure, you can watch a ball game sitting at home, but you'd miss the smell of hot dogs, the sound of cheers, the feeling of rush when you have the bases loaded and two outs with your star hitter coming to bat.

We learned about moving onto Billboard's Top 40 with our song 'A Dance' and then moved up on 'Paradise' on the Adult Contemporary stations to number #32. We had a big show and perfect weather at the National Cherry Blossom Festival.....loads of folks came out.

Spring...YESSSSSSS!

Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband. The show was perfect in everyway, but what struck me the most-the dialogue. How clever of a playwright he was. Every line was brilliant. I started thinking about songs that also possess that cleverness and drifted over to James Taylor. When you heard his songs, you could see the picture he was painting, like 'Carolina.'

I woke up this weekend to find that someone had decided to dump my Turning Point album out to these web hosting sites and offered free downloads. So, far, I have had to pull down 4 sites. I am sure there are more. Besides the fact that the act in question is illegal, it occurred to me that, for the most part, people who are not in the music industry just do not get it.

I headed to the east coast beaches this past week. It reminded me of the music video we shot last June for Simple Touch. I was able to capture a few dolphins on camera, although they were being slightly shy. When I came back to DC, I headed to studio to begin another adventure in song writing.
